“Design thinking can be described as a discipline that uses the designer’s sensibility and methods to match people’s needs with what is technologically feasible and what a viable business strategy can convert into customer value and market opportunity.”
– Tim Brown CEO, IDEO
Design is much more than making the product look attractive and impressive. As innovation’s terrain expands, designers create ideas rather than simply dressing them up.
The design team at Copper Mobile creates meaningful ideas that are effective to the real world. The focus has shifted from an impressive and aesthetically appealing design to problem solving interactive layouts. We assert a hands-on user centric approach to create ideas that solve problems.
We follow Design Thinking approach which combines what is desirable from a human point of view with what is technologically feasible and economically viable.
Why Design Thinking?
In the era of changing technology, it is impossible for an enterprise to excel without innovating. With changes taking place in the way we live, no one will survive if they think what worked before will work now. There is a change in the way people communicate, lifestyle has changed, users have changed. In order for us to stay up to date, we must move along with these changes. Design Thinking is a road map that assures you that the final product will be innovative, creative and amazing giving you infinite options.
Design Thinking makes you think out of the box
It breaks your perceptions and shows you the undiscovered possibilities. It keeps you in tune with users and their problems, empowering the designers to create real time solutions.
It has opened up opportunities for the thinkers which helps them focus on user experience as well as user interface. We follow an overall flow of understanding, exploring and materializing. The flow has phases: Research, Define, Idea, Prototype, Feedback, Implement.
The process does not eliminate creating blueprints i.e UI. It is a continuous process that let’s you focus on human centric designs. It provides you with multiple solutions and a different view every time. The success, however, lies in the ability to incorporate design thinking that leads to a better user experience.
How has design thinking changed our work?
- We focus on the end user. We aren’t designing something because it looks good or is trending, we are doing it to provide the best user experience.
- It is a team effort where each person in the team brings a level of expertise to the conversation.
- It considers human emotions and is empathetic. Considering these, we focus on real human interaction with our designs.
- Design Thinking encourages testing. Lots of them. We are not afraid to rethink things. Revision is the key to our success.
- We solve actual problems as it takes us back to the reason why we are designing in the first place. The questions we answer are, What are we trying to accomplish and how will it help/educate the users?
User Experience (UX) shares a lot in common with Design Thinking for example- understanding the users, methods, ideas, prototyping, testing with users. However, the differences are subtle.
Most designers do not link back to the users while creating new ideas which ultimately impacts the UX. It is important for a UI designer to also be good at UX as it helps them in creating functionally sound screens with smooth transitions.
For example- A beauty application that opens to a login screen should take the user to his/her profile once signed in. The shift between two screens is logical that once you have signed up for the beauty products, the user should be able to view his/her profile. The screens should simple, neat and classy as you do not want to confuse the users. Keeping the user in mind, the designer ensures that the transition from one screen to another is smooth and comes naturally to the user. Since, the attention span of a human is less, there is a high possibility for the user to uninstall the app.
To retain users, each UI/UX is reviewed by its target audience to attain feedback which is incorporated before the screens are finalised.
