    Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period

The Medicare Advantage open enrollment period is an annual window, running January 1 to March 31, during which a Medicare Advantage enrollee may switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare and add a Part D plan. It replaced the earlier, more limited Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period (MADP).

    Definition

The Medicare Advantage open enrollment period is an annual window, running January 1 to March 31, during which a Medicare Advantage enrollee may switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare and add a Part D plan. It replaced the earlier, more limited Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period (MADP).

    Why it matters

It gives Medicare Advantage members a second yearly chance to correct a plan choice, which can matter when a plan's network or benefits do not fit the patient's care needs.
